Background
Nizhal, along with the PWD, Government of Tamil Nadu has embarked on the development of a park along the Adyar river bank in Kotturpuram as an eco-landmark for the city. The project envisages planting and rising of a variety of trees and shrubs in the five acre river bank land made ready by PWD.

The objective of this project is to help increase the flora and fauna and provide a good habitat for birds and butterflies. Out of the 100 tree species native to the Chennai coast, known as tropical evergreen forest trees, Nizhal plans to plant at least one tree of each species. The regeneration of these trees will be a great source of interest and learning for the citizens. The park can also be used as a Tree Learning Centre by students.
Current activities
Most of the tree saplings were sourced from Auroville Nurseries and other local nurseries around Chennai. Monitoring of the park is carried out every couple of days by a dedicated team of Nizhal volunteers. The team checks the condition of the saplings and the area around the saplings. ‘Shramdhans’ are held at the park on alternate Sundays. During these shramdhans, Nizhal volunteers are assisted by volunteers from Bhumi, an NGO comprised of young professionals - in the making of recycled cycle tyre tree guards, weeding and watering of the saplings.
