Nizhal believes that long-term progress in nature conservation demands real partnerships based on mutual trust with local communities and organizations. With this in mind, Nizhal has engaged with local communities, organizations and corporates in several greening projects. The Corporation of Chennai has also helped Nizhal in various ways with its greening endeavours.
Local communities
Nizhal has provided saplings to many organizations and individuals interested in planting, including Sevalaya, Pammal Municipality, St Louis’ Deaf and Dumb School, Gandhi Nagar, Bala Mandir Trust - for the Satyamurthy School, Sanskrit College, Mylapore.

Carefully chosen species of saplings have been planted in the Kasturba Gandhi hospital for women and children in Triplicane, the Cancer institute in Adayar, Y.M.C.A., Thiruneermalai school, the army areas, the Royapuram boy's home and in various neighbourhoods including in and around Kotturpuram, Besant nagar, Velachery and Greams road.

Advice on the planting of trees has been provided to several organizations including Y.M.C.A, Kalakshetra, Namma mylapore program, National maritime academy and the Ministry of shipping, Government of India.
Kaattuppalli: A one-year Green Coast Project sponsored by the Wetlands International in Kaattuppalli Island began in 2006 which involved sensitive greening of the area. Members of Nizhal periodically visited the Kuppam to ensure that the trees/plants were surviving and also to offer support to the women of the village. This monitoring continued even after the official completion of the project in May 2007. Cash incentives were provided to the residents for greening measures. About 300 of the planted saplings are thriving along with the individual home fruit and vegetable gardens that have curry leaves, moringa, guava, papaya and sapota trees.

Kotturpuram MRTS planting: 20 saplings were planted along the Kotturpuram MRTS station in 2007, with the initiative of the Station Manager and community support. The saplings are monitored with the support of the local community.
